ABOUT
About This Project
After the Glass Ceiling is an essay in e-book format ruminating on the trials and triumphs of being a woman in a male-dominated field. The essay combines interviews, personal narrative and research-based narrative to create a unique experience. The purpose of this essay is to serve as somewhat of a guidebook for women entering male-dominated fields, so that they know what problems they may encounter but also how real-world women solved those problems. Having a background in journalism, I've long been intrigued by the reported essay and for this project, I wanted to combine my desire to work in the format with my love of giving back to other women in male-dominated fields. Take a look around this site to learn more about me and the five female U-M professors I interviewed for this project.
About Me
Hi, I'm Aria! I'm a senior at the University of Michigan graduating with a degree in Political Science and minors in History and Writing. My college experience was defined by my time at Michigan's student-run newspaper, The Michigan Daily, where I worked as a sports writer, senior sports editor and audience engagement editor. While I loved being able to work at sporting events, it was tough being one of the few women both on the section and in the press box. I became driven to give back, and throughout my time with The Daily I led a Women's History Month initiative for two years and wrote numerous features on women's sports. That experience is what informed this project; I know the pain that comes with being a woman in a male-dominated field, but I also know the community it's brought me. I've tried to be open about my experiences and the things I've learned in hopes that it will help someone in the future and I hope this project gives women of all ages in male-dominated fields the confidence and information they need to pursue their dreams.
